The Moscow Arbitrazh Court ordered Wintershall DEA to pay RUB 7.5 billion for pursuing arbitration proceedings against Russia
In 2024, Wintershall DEA initiated two international arbitration proceedings. The German group accused the Russian Federation of breaching the Germany–Russia bilateral investment treaty and the Energy Charter Treaty, as well as of the de facto expropriation of its assets. In Russia, Wintershall DEA held ownership interests in projects developing the Urengoy and Yuzhno-Russkoye gas fields.
In September, the Moscow Arbitrazh Court prohibited the company from continuing arbitration proceedings against Russia abroad. On 21 November 2025, the court subsequently ordered joint and several liability against Wintershall DEA, the law firm representing it in the arbitration, and the arbitrators, awarding €7.5 billion in damages for ignoring the court’s injunction.
