New restrictions for foreign mass media are under discussion in Russia. According to media, the RF Ministry of Communications proposes to prohibit foreign media to distribute their materials in the RF in case they abuse freedom of speech and violate the law on combating extremism. Starting from January 01, 2016 a prohibition for foreigners to own and control more than 20% of shares of a Russian media founder comes into force. Besides, a Bill obliging mass media to inform the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications on funding from abroad is under consideration.
